Our client was an East Texas dog training center located behind the owner’s house in a residential neighborhood.
Prior to contacting us, the center had been content to hold dog training classes only during daylight hours. However, as their class scheduled filled to capacity, they realized they would need to light at least a portion of the dog training center in order to handle the new business.

In reality, they only needed to light one end of the enclosure. This was due to two reasons.
First, only one end of the rectangular arena was consistently used to begin with. Because the owner had deliberately allowed trees and foliage to grow in one corner of the enclosure, this end of the facility was never used very much for training purposes—even during the day. It served as a mini-park within the center and provided the dogs with a natural break area. Training activities and classes were always held near the kennel across the enclosure, part of which extended into the fence line and provided controlled access to and from the open area.

Another important consideration was budget. While the client was willing to pay for the very best in equipment quality, they wanted to minimize the quantity of actual poles and fixtures and achieve the best results with fewer line items on the purchase order.

The client had already decided to purchase wooden lighting through a local contractor who was scheduled to install them.
They simply needed to know how many poles to buy, and what type of fixtures to mount on them. We were asked to make these recommendations and provide the best luminaires for the task at hand. They gave us the dimensions of the enclosure and some basic considerations to keep in mind while lighting it. Dogs, they reminded us, are direct descendants of wolves, and have the same nocturnal aptitudes as their ancient ancestors. They are neither spooked by shadows like horses, nor do they need as much light as a horse or human would in a similar horse arena lighting system.

With this in mind, we created a CAD file from the numbers they provided us, and we used it to create 3D renderings of hypothetical layouts and different levels of light. We eventually determined that the dog training center would best be illuminated at a level of 20’ candles concentrated toward one end of the enclosure.

The final equipment list allowed the client to stay within their budget with only 3 poles and 6 fixtures.
To prevent light spillage into neighboring residences, we recommended placing one pole on either side of the field, and one pole at the end. To achieve 20’ candles in and around the center of the field without creating light pollution for neighboring residences, we decided on a layout that featured mounting two 1000W cutoff floodlights on each pole and tilting them a lighting angle of incidence of 10 degrees.
